Creating Positive Futures Work Programme

One of the literacy charities the Note Project is currently donating proceeds from gift set sales is a fundraiser headed by the New Horizon Youth Centre.  The New Horizon Youth Center is raising money in an attempt to create work programmes.

This programme is successfully addressing the demand from young homeless people attending New Horizon Youth Centre for realistic education, employment and training (EET) opportunities. It addresses barriers that prevent these young people engaging with learning, to develop their employment skills and secure employment. Many of them are Not in Education Training or Employment (NEET), highly vulnerable, with learning disabilities and come to us from across London.

1 in 20 16 year olds leave school without a single GCSE pass and government figures indicate that over 20% of young people do not go on to training or work. Despite the UK Government’s vigorous attempts to raise standards in recent years, these numbers remain constant. Poor basic skills directly influence an individual’s life chances and they are at risk of being marginalised and are more prone to unemployment and poor health. All this project’s young people fit into the above category.

96% of the young people visiting our daycentre are not in education, training or employment. This project will deliver a holistic package of support to homeless clients who are already working with our advice team to address their accommodation needs, to get them ready for work. It will be led by 2 designated Lifeskills Workers providing daily support, 7 days a week and will work with the individual to develop a tailor made package responding to specific needs.

The long term effects of the project are to raise the self esteem, confidence and employability of at least 300 young, disadvantaged and marginalised Londoners annually. The problem of worklessness is a very real one for the young people visiting our daycentre. They are often leaving care or are victims of abusive or neglectful homes. They are looked upon as a ‘drain’ on their communities who see them as exploiting the benefits’ system and unfit or unwilling to engage in gainful employment.

Total Funding Received to Date: $680

Remaining Goal to be Funded: $89,320

Happy Thanksgiving

All day yesterday and today people have been posting what they are thankful for on Facebook. I’m not an avid Twitter-er, but I’m sure its the same story there as well.

The Thanksgiving dinner tradition has changed a lot in my family.  When I was little it was a huge family affair.  I remember the living room at my great aunt’s house being turned into a make shift dining room; the dining room table elongated with the use of strategically placed side tables and card tables.  I also remember my cousin being referred to as “Turkey Boy” for the rest of the night as he not so willingly became our personal waiter.  But that’s another story.  A few years after that, dinner consisted of my grandparents and my parents, then just one parent or the other and maybe a few friends.  Last year my mom and I went out to dinner for Thanksgiving for the first time, I was not a fan.  This year its another first for me: I’m spending the day with my boyfriend’s family.  Regardless of where you are on Thanksgiving, the idea of gratitude and appreciation on this special day remains the same.

I work at a gift and stationary store and we sell these enclosure cards:

They make a good hostess gift, or place setting.  Sure would look nice with some embellishments, the Stickles and glitter are up on the second floor…oh right, I’ve got the day off (another thing I’m thankful for).

These cards are business card size.  I doubt the list of things I’m thankful for would fit on one of these cards.  Even if I wrote really, really small.  There’s a lot to be thankful for!  My mom, my dad, my step-mom, my grandparents, my dog, my mom’s pets, my friends, my boyfriend and his family, my education, my apartment, the clothing on my back, my rather large shoe collection, my job (frustrating as it may be at times).  I’m also thankful for the continuous love and support I receive from my family.  I’m thankful for various traits and beliefs my parents instilled in me: my creativity, my intelligence, the idea that I can do anything I set my mind to.  I am lucky–it is hard for me to think of things not to be thankful for.

Tomorrow is a day that revolves around gratitude.  The Note Project encourages you to be thankful everyday, but tomorrow-out of every other day of the year-tell somebody thanks.  Jot them a quick note sharing your appreciation, call them and tell them how thankful you are for them, or even better, sit down with them for a great thanksgiving day meal and thank them face to face.  (Okay, if nothing else, post what you’re thankful for on Facebook).  Even if you’re not good at expressing how you feel, the simple words “thank you” says a whole lot, especially on Thanksgiving Day.

Have a great day today.  Enjoy your company–family, friends, pets.  Enjoy your food–whether its a traditional turkey dinner or a tofu dinner.  Enjoy being thankful–take a second during the day and think about what you’re grateful for this year.

Note Project Sponsor Jodi Michele Cooley

Meet Jodi Michele Cooley.  Jodi has been a sponsor of the Note Project since the beginning.  She is an avid inspirational speaker and life coach.  Her aim is to encourage you to do what is best for you–and she’ll teach you how to make the right decisions to change and ultimately live a more fulfilling life.  Here’s more about Jodi:

The most important thing is to acknowledge and accept where we came from. This is the starting point of reclaiming your life. You have to recognize what you’ve been through and what you’ve accomplished in your life in order to move forward. Reclaiming your life is about coming to a place where you realize what you’ve gotten in the past with your life, what you would like to happen, and creating a strategy to rewrite your story.

Unfortunately you’ve lived your life a certain way for many, many, many years. You have beliefs and philosophies have been drilled, soldered, and hardwired into your being. They’ve kept you safe and hidden from experiencing new experiences in life.

What’s been going on in life has been going on for sometime. You’ve been living on autopilot for a LONG time. It’s a process and you need to respect it as such. Putting unnecessary pressures on you will only cause more damage in the long run. Be patient, kind and loving to yourself, just like you would with a little child.

In order to get where you want in this life you need support and guidance.

Let Jodi’s story be your inspiration and hope be your driving force. You can reclaim your life. You can overcome life obstacles and your self-defeating behaviors. By contacting Jodi you will explore how you can work together to write your own success story, beginning today.

You can visit Jodi’s site by clicking HERE.

Jodi has her own internet radio show; you can listen by clicking HERE.

HERE’s Jodi’s contact information–change your life today!

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area

One of the literacy programs that the Note Project recently decided to donate to is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area.  The Boys & Girls Clubs is aiming to expand literacy programs in the Portland area.  Every time you buy a Note Project gift set from our site, a donation will be made to the Boys & Girls Clubs to help in their endeavor.

Here’s more about their charity:

This project will expand a successful literacy instruction model to youth struggling with learning differences, providing a structured, caring environment to help youth achieve academic success.

One out of five children is dyslexic. At the Boys & Girls Clubs we see children who are frustrated academically, children with a fear and dislike of reading, children with low self-esteem. In partnership with the University of Oregon, two public school districts, two parochial schools, and the Housing Authority of Portland, the Clubs will expand an existing literacy model to each Club and partnership location throughout the Portland area, ensuring no child is left behind in our care.

Providing a multi-sensory approach to leaning, the Literacy Centers goal is to increase youth engagment in learning and to increase the number of youth who can demonstrate written compostion skills; including sentence and paragraph structure.

The project will expand Literacy programs to more than 13,000 young people in the Portland area, providing academic support to youth with learning differences and benefiting the academic lives of every child within our care.

SproutLaunch

SproutLaunch is not only a sponsor of the Note Project, but is also a great site that encourages kindness, appreciation, and gratitude every day. Here’s the story behind SproutLaunch:

SproutLaunch was originally created in an attempt to encourage and challenge the founder, Molly Quarles, to complete one random act of kindness each day. From there, it sparked (or sprouted!) the idea of including others in this mission by motivating people with random rewards. At that point, the idea behind SproutLaunch was born: become the online resource for good deed inspiration while rewarding good deed-doers!

SproutLaunch is the only online source for good deed inspiration that rewards its users. In addition to rewarding good deed-doers, SproutLaunch recommends daily simple good deed ideas, lists companies making a difference in their communities (whether globally or locally), highlights non-profit missions, and also displays good deeds submitted by visitors for further inspiration. National and local advertisers can sponsor a week and provide rewards (their product, service, gift cards or event tickets) which are randomly selected for distribution amongst the good deed doer’s from that week.

Join SproutLaunch in doing one good deed each day! Visit the site by clicking HERE.

Here’s how the site works:

1.Do a good deed

2. Enter your good deed for a chance to win National and Local rewards.

3. Winners are randomly selected and emailed their reward each Sunday. You can keep the reward or pay it forward to a friend!

Pretty awesome. SproutLaunch also has a section of good deeds that you can easily do, either in five minutes or in one day. Check it out, click HERE. After I post this blog post I think I’ll send a thank you note to someone in the military through LetsSayThanks.com, or take a quiz on FreePoverty.com, a site that donates water on my behalf–by simply taking a quiz. I wouldn’t have known about these sites if I had not visited SproutLaunch.

Be sure to follow the SproutLaunch blog and share your daily good deed. With SproutLaunch as a part of your daily internet surfing routine, you’ll never run out of good deed ideas!
